Koala Living & Zolak: From Browsing Furniture to Designing the Room
The Partnership
A Furniture Catalog Customers Design With
Koala Living wanted its catalog to work the way people actually think about furniture - as part of a room. Together with Zolak, the brand built a self-service room designer where customers explore the range by putting it to use. Here's what the experience looks like for a customer.
Koala Living is a Melbourne-based furniture and homewares retailer that started online and grew into a national brand with 20+ galleries across Australia. Its in-house Design House develops exclusive collections for living, dining, bedroom and outdoor spaces.
Koala Living has always sold furniture as part of a complete interior: styled galleries, sourcebooks and in-person interior consultations, more recently joined by virtual ones. The Room Designer, live since 2024, takes that approach into self-service. Online shoppers can now design a room on their own, whenever they want, with the Koala Living catalog.

The challenge
What Would My Room Look Like with Koala Living?
See Furniture in the Room It's Meant For
Online, it's hard to judge whether a sofa or dining table will fit the space and work with what's already there.
Try Different Materials and Finishes
The same piece can look completely different in another fabric or finish. Customers want to compare options in context, not from a list of swatches.
Put a Whole Room Together
Koala Living sells across living, dining, bedroom and décor. Customers want to see how several pieces work together, not one product at a time.
Make the Online Catalog Worth Exploring
Product pages show the range, but they don't invite customers to explore it.
Koala Living wanted shoppers to spend time with the catalog: try pieces in a room, compare finishes and combine collections into their own interiors.

Zolak Showroom: A Room Designer Built Around the Koala Living Catalog
Zolak Showroom puts the full range into an interactive room, and User Interior Visualization lets customers work with a photo of their own home. Every change shows up in the room right away, so shoppers can try as many ideas as they like and save the designs they want to keep.
The Room Designer isn't a widget tucked into a product page. It has its own dedicated page on the site, alongside the brand's interior design services, so shoppers can come to it directly to plan a room.
The brand already had 3D models of its furniture. Zolak prepared them for the Showroom, so it could launch on existing assets.
